Instructions for Discussion Board Posts

Reading should never be a passive experience. In order to encourage active reading, I’m asking you to participate in periodic discussions via posts on Moodle. On assigned days (typically for asynchronous class assignments on Thursdays), you will develop an original post that responds to the reading as well as a response to two of your peers’ posts.

  • Please pay careful attention to our course schedule, as the due dates for these responses will vary.
  • All posts and responses must be completed by the deadline listed in Moodle.
  • Original posts should be thorough – around 500 words.
  • Responses should be thoughtful – around 200 words.
  • Images, video, audio, and links to other pages are welcome in your posts. (Some prompts will ask you for these elements specifically.)

These discussion posts should be an outlet for analysis and conversation about course texts; so feel free to interpret the reading response questions creatively. Keep in mind the typical genre conventions of blog posts, and feel free to write in a conversational yet appropriate tone. Avoid robotic responses to peers (“I agree with you, X…”) or original responses that answer the question without going into detail. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t understand, and certainly don’t hesitate to make connections to things we’ve discussed in class or things you’ve read outside of our class. The sky’s the limit, as long as you post on time.
